Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight of a person. It is defined as the individual's body weight divided by the square of his height (BMI = kg/m2). It can be used to indicate if you are overweight, obese, underweight or normal.
A healthy BMI score is between 18.5 and 24.9. A score below 18.5 indicates that you may be underweight; a value above 25 indicates that you may be overweight.
If our calculator indicated you have a BMI of over 24.9 it is recommended you take advice from a health professional. You may have an increased risk of developing certain diseases, including:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Cardiovascular Disease (heart disease, stroke etc)
- Adult-Onset Diabetes (Type II Diabetes)
- Sleep Apnoea (difficulty breathing during sleep)
- Osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease)
- Female Infertility
- Depression, low self esteem and other psychological conditions
- Some types of cancers
